"CURIOSITY"- BOON OR BANE
The paradoxical nature of this trait was personified for the ancient Greeks in the mythical figure of Pandora.
According to the legend, she was the first mortal woman, whose blazing curiosity set a chain of earth-shattering events in motion. Pandora was breathed into being by Hephaestus, god of fire who enlisted the help of his divine companions to make her extraordinary. She was introduced to the gods, who granted her different gifts. From the Greek god of love and beauty, Aphrodite, she received the capacity for deep emotion and unparalleled beauty; from Hermes, the messenger of gods, she gained mastery over language. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war gave the gift of fine craftsmanship and attention to the detail, and Hermes gave her, her name. The charities (minor goddesses of charm, beauty and nature) adorned her with clothes and jewels. Pandora turned into a magnificent creature. Finally, Zeus the supreme god and god of sky bestowed two gifts on Pandora. The first was the trait of curiosity, which settled in her spirit and set her eagerly out into the world. The second was a heavy, beautiful box, ornately curved, heavy to hold and screwed tightly shut. But to the contents, Zeus told her, that it were not for mortal eyes and she wasn't supposed to open the box under any circumstances.

On earth, Pandora met Epimetheus, a talented titan who had been given the task of designing the natural world by Zeus . He had worked alongside his brother Prometheus, who created the first humans but eternally punished for giving the fire. At the beginning of time, the titan brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus were responsible for the creation of men. To foster the development of his creation Prometheus promised to steal the sacred fire from the gods and give it humanity. The titan knew that he would not go unpunished from such a crime, sooner or later he would be punished by the gods. He also knew, that the fate of his brother and humanity was in danger and advised his brother,"Epimetheus, my dear brother, my misfortune will not be enough to tackle Zeus's wrath, regardless of what may happen don't ever accept any gifts from the gods, with that our creation will be safe." Epimetheus welcomed the advice with gratitude and assured him that he wouldn't accept any gifts from the gods. Just had Promitheus predicted Zeus devised a plan against Epimetheus and humanity. Well, the box that Pandora had was the gift given by Zeus. Epimetheus missed his brother desperately but in Pandora he found another fiery hearted soul for companionship. Pandora overflowed with excitement at life on earth. But also, she wondered what kind of gift could be inside, since the box itself was already stunning. What treasure was so great it could never be seen by human eyes, and why was it in her care? Her fingers itched to pry it open. It's mystery became maddening. Over time, Pandora become more and more obsessed with the box. One day, she could bear it no longer. She failed to resist her curiosity and decided to look inside. Pandora opened the box carefully, the naive young woman had no idea what was coming.

But at the first crack of the lid, the box burst open. Monstrous creatures and horrible sounds rushed out in a cloud of smoke, screeching and cracking. Filled with terror, Pandora clawed desperately at the air to direct them back into there prison. The mist contained all the evils that Prometheus had not nurtured in men, until that moment, man was pure and lived in the golden age. There were no needs and no conflicts, it was a world of pure happiness. But the box liberated all sorts of evils that would plague humanity. Envy, cruelty, greed, disease and hunger were now part of the world of men. Pandora unsuccessfully attempted to close the box. As she wept, Pandora became aware of a sound echoing from within the box. This was not to the strange whispering of demons, but a light tinkling that seemed to ease her anguish. The girl noticed that every evil had come out of the box but HOPE was found at the bottom. Hope gives strength to man not to give up his life, when facing evils and obstacles that afflict him. As she watched it flickering in the wake of the evil she'd unleashed, Pandora's pain was eased.

Today, Pandora's box suggests the extreme consequences of tampering with the unknown, but Pandora's burning curiosity also suggests the duality that lies at the heart of human inquiry........ Are we bound to investigate everything we don't know in this world or are there some mysteries that are better left unsolved??
